Gabrielle Petito turned up dead. Her boyfriend wandered off into the gator swamps near their home. National news. Gabrielle... Gabby... was white. I won't hit the highlights of this future Lifetime Movie Channel sob-buster, although the urge to mention the dirty Laundrie is nearly overwhelming.
Race-baiters [coff Joy Ried coff coff] around the country are wondering why – again – the national media concentrates, dotes, fixates on the missing white woman and ignores the many, many missing black women. It is Missing White Woman Syndrome, a self-pitying turn of self-pity quasi-coined by the self-pitying Gwen Ifill in 2004. Frankly, the national media ignores virtually all missing persons cases. There've been 7,000 people who have disappeared from sight thus far in 2021 alone, statistically half being female and most of those being adults, not to mention multiple tens of thousands of missing carry-overs from previous years, and the national media has spent any serious amount of time on exactly one of them in the last three years. There aren't enough milk cartons in the world for our lost. The odds are long against contracting Missing Anyrace Woman Syndrome, so dry your tears.
But the answer to the pouty, pouty challenge of Missing White Woman is trivially easy to understand by anyone who has paid attention to the media over the last several decades. It boils down to statistics. It's a numbers game on an agenda playing field.
When women go missing, the odds that they have been killed are quite high. It's not guaranteed, but it's next-to.
When women are killed, the odds that they have been killed by an intimate partner are also quite high. Again, not guaranteed, but next-to.
Whether we wish to acknowledge it or not [and our race-baiters likely will not], most white women are intimately involved with white men, and most black women are intimately involved with black men. This is less true, today, for white women than black women, but it is for both the widely predominant reality. When a white woman goes missing, she's probably dead, and if she's dead, it's probably a white male intimate who done it. When a black woman goes missing, she's also probably dead, and if she's dead, it's almost certainly a black male intimate who done it. Statistics.
Another predominant reality of the last several decades is that the national media has a vested interest in protecting black males from social criticism, from societal censure, from honest inspection. It serves the media's interests to indulge in partisan advocacy in the same way that it used to serve their interests to indulge in honest journalism. Mention the statistical reality of black males' involvement in crime, shorthanded to bumper-sticker pith, “Thirteen do Fifty-Two”, and you'll find yourself silenced. Cancel-culted. And the media will be the loudest cancelers.
Not for spreading misinformation, mind you. Blacks – 13% of the population of the US – commit 52% of the crime in the US. That's straight from the FBI. You'll be silenced for reminding information-hungry Americans of the true information, and not the pabulum that the media insists on spoon-feeding us.
Why would the media spend its time covering missing black women only to find out that they've been murdered and that they were killed by their black husbands, boyfriends or secret lovers? That would cut against the grain of the media's thirty-year narrative of the US being a recidivist racist sweat shop. It serves, instead, the media's purpose to cover missing white women. For chances are quite good that they have also been murdered, and that their white husband, boyfriend or secret lover is the killer.
Compare the number of murders of unarmed black males by cops [single digits each year] against the number of murders of black males by other black males [thousands each year] and the coverage the media gives to both, and the repercussions of that coverage. The media is hardly being coy in disguising its motives when it comes to race.
In the subject of missing women, it's win-win for the media. Playing Missing White Woman provides cover for black males, and portrays white males as homicidal maniacs.
And if it's ever learned that the white woman was killed by a non-white male, as Kathryn Steinle and Mollie Tibbets were, then the media gets to trump national outrage the media itself ginned up over their murders by playing the Racist Card. The only reason that the national media [in this circumstance, considered to be the white national media] devoted their energy into wall-to-wall coverage is to serve the racist needs of their primary audience. ...which only goes to show how clueless the media has become. The Media, especially the national players in same, has largely fallen out of favor with everyone but “progressives” [ironic term] who don't need convincing of the media's ideology.
In any event, it's now a win-win-win for the media.
Make that a win-win-win-win. For while they are covering for black males by ignoring missing black women, working to portray white males as brutish killers for doting on missing white women, and playing the Racist Card on the outlier killers of white women, they get to pretend that the industry that they control – the media – is racist for doing all of it.
Joy Reid has conceded to being a white supremacist for her refusal to cover, as a “journalist” for the major national media outlet of MSNBC, the disappearance of easily a hundred black women in 2021. All it took was her criticizing the lack of that coverage as a manifestation of racism, and doing nothing about it during her ample on-air face time.
Ms Black, in the Newsroom, with a sound bite.
